During the bulk of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned within a psychic prison forged from the past of Vecna. Their mission for freedom in episode 6 has them experience a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—an event that may just hold the key to defeating him permanently.
Editor's Note: This discussion reveals crucial plot points for the second part of the final season.
Upon meeting Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies not within the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.
There, they witness a Henry as a boy encounter an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the event involved more than a defensive killing.
In keeping with mysteries of the final season, the truth about the events in the tunnel originates in the stage play the prequel play.
*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a vessel into a realm known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.
The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to hand over to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. The man in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.
Given what is known about his research, the case most likely held some of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would later pass on to the children Brenner would experiment on.
Another possibility, the container could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he fights the control of a sinister presence, similar to how Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in season 2.
The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine shows how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. Even as he commands the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to become stronger.
His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the series finale that awaits.
