Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and you become extremely hungry," described an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
