Presence Film
Soderbergh pushes his creative boundaries through this nifty ghostly tale captured wholly from the viewpoint of a ghost. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their fresh home, the camera – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. The daughter appears sensing the supernatural presence, and it seems guarding her. But why? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist that may be unexpected. This Self-Referential Film
Cage fully commits to his unique fame via this autobiographical spoof. He portrays a narcissistic Hollywood actor playing himself who takes on a million-dollar gig to visit a birthday party on the Spanish island for billionaire Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by the CIA to investigate the suspected cartel boss, his “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, evening, the Channel 4 network
This Creepy Thriller
The director's locked-room horror holds up well even without a follow-up. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has left the youth on edge. Once Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and locked up in a basement, he anticipates the worst. Yet the disconnected phone in the room keeps ringing, with spooky callers providing assistance, as the intuitive nightmares from his sibling Gwen could save him. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, late evening, the Film4 channel
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the battle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for materialism in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top true story about the fallen TV preacher and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield acts as the venal Jim, who proclaims initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye commence profiting from the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, yet Jessica Chastain achieves to depict the character as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, Film4
