The White Sox Secure Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial Multi-Million Dollar Deal.

In a major move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract for the accomplished player.

Deal Structure and Incentives

The contract grants a $1 million signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside salaries of $16 million for the upcoming season and $17 million for the 2027 year.

Notably, Murakami's final-year pay is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:

• An additional $1M for winning the MVP award.
• Half a million dollars for placing second or third in MVP voting.
• A quarter-million for finishing fourth through 10th.
• Another $250,000 for earning the ROY honor.

His deal also stipulates that he will not be optioned to the farm system without his permission and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the deal. Extra provisions include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.

Compensation and Franchise History

As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows are also entitled to a 15% cut of 15% triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami is set to become the fourth player from Japan to play for the White Sox, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami during their time in Japan.

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 soon, joins a emerging group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth.
