"People overlook the tough times, the nervousness and anxiety involved in that achievement," the cricketer reflects
"With pride I remember. I made an important impact in a tournament that saw England triumphed 3-1 down under where each victory were won by an innings"
Cook's road toward Australian glory began 18 months earlier at the end of that year's Ashes in the UK
England won, the opening batsman had an average below 25 with just one score over fifty
He sought improvement
"Despite cricket's collective nature, personal performance does make you feel like you want to pull your weight," he explains
Shortly after the victory celebrations, he was back at work facing countless deliveries in practice under Graham Gooch's guidance
Beginning performances showed promise
Cook made three hundreds during winter tours in South Africa and Bangladesh
Upon his return to home soil for that year's summer, the batsman had a "stinker"
During eight batting opportunities against Bangladesh and Pakistan, his highest score reached only 29
On nought not out at the end of the second day's play in the third match against Pakistan in London, Cook was convinced it might be his final Test performance ahead of potential omission
"There I was at the bar, attempting to discover the solution in the bottom of a beer bottle," he confesses
The 110-run innings secured his place on the plane to Australia
The team maintained preparations by winning two and drawing one in practice matches in Australia
As the opening match began in Brisbane, they encountered three wickets from Siddle
Shortly prior to the third day's close, both batsmen started the English reply trailing by 221 runs
They reached 19-0 at stumps and proceeded with a performance etched in Ashes folklore
"I cannot recall any instructions, our conversations," Cook remembers
The opening pair added 188 together
Cook's 235 not out represented the top score by an Englishman on Australian soil for 82 years
England capitalised on a remarkable opening session during the following Test in South Australia
Following Anderson's additional wicket the opposition player, Australia were 2-3 and struggled throughout
Cook followed up his Brisbane heroics through a 148-run innings in a famous match featuring Pietersen's destruction of the Australian bowling
England could have retained the series in Western Australia, however Johnson to foreshadow the havoc that would come later
Then came perhaps England's single greatest day in Ashes history on Australian soil
At the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the enormous ground of Australian cricket, on the holiday, the home side were dismissed for 98
"If perfection existed for Boxing Day, this was it. Incredulity reigned when play concluded," says Cook
Motivated by purpose to claim victory, Cook excelled once more at the SCG
His score of 189 helped England reach 644, their highest total in a Test in Australia
The uncertainty wasn't if England would win both match and urn, but the timing
"The atmosphere was incredible," recalls Cook
"When Tremlett got the last player to win the match, it represented an instant of absolute joy"
The batsman received top accolades
The remaining seven years of his Test career featured other milestones
Post-cricket career, he was honored for cricket contributions
