The English golfer Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Battle Versus Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed remarkable composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off following a topsy-turvy last day of play.
The Englishman sank a crucial birdie putt from just over eight feet to clinch the win, repeating his only previous tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff victory against the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Excitement
The champion started the final round with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.
The challenger moved a stroke ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final hole.
Playoff Climax
That set up a playoff at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to take the championship and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13 million) in prize money.

To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to describe at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”
Notable Performances
The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to make up, finishing a stroke short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under closing round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever round on the DP World Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his chances of leading the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell produced an superb final-round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
