A youth from NSW has been charged after allegedly placing numerous prank calls to emergency services – a practice called “swatting calls” – wrongly stating mass shootings were occurring at major retail and educational institutions across the America.

Global Investigation Culminates in Charges

Australian authorities laid charges against the boy on the 18th of December. They claim he belongs to a purported decentralised online criminal group concealed by keyboards in order to trigger an “urgent and significant SWAT team deployment”.

“Often young males between the ages of 11 to 25, are participating in crime types such as swatting, doxing and computer intrusion to earn credibility, infamy and recognition in their online groups.”

During the probe, police seized multiple electronic devices and a prohibited firearm discovered in the juvenile’s custody. This action was conducted under Taskforce Pompilid established in late 2025.

Authorities Deliver a Clear Message

A senior AFP official, issuing a warning, advised that those believing they can break the law using technology and encrypted identities were on notice.

Federal authorities stated it initiated its inquiry after getting tip-offs from US federal agents.

An FBI assistant director, from the global operations unit, remarked that the “risky and resource-draining offense” of false reports endangered lives and wasted critical public safety assets.

“This investigation demonstrates that anonymity in the digital realm is an myth,” he stated in a shared press release alongside Australian police.

He continued, “We are committed to collaborating with our Australian counterparts, our global allies, and tech companies to identify and hold accountable people who misuse digital tools to create danger to society.”

Legal Proceedings

The accused faces 12 counts of telecommunications offences and one count of unauthorised possession of a prohibited firearm. The individual could face up to fourteen years in jail.

“Our pledge (is|remains) to halting the distress and anguish individuals of this online crime network are imposing on the community, while laboring under the illusion they are anonymous,” Marshall stated.

The youth was due to appear in a New South Wales youth court on this week.
