This year's championship series is going to a decisive Game 7 following the Los Angeles Dodgers kept their repeat dreams alive Friday night with a three to one win over the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 6.
The defending champions ended Toronto’s ninth-inning rally with a thrilling game-ending twin killing, stunning a home crowd that had come ready to celebrate the team's first title in 32 years.
The Dodgers generated all of their scoring in the third frame. With two outs, Shohei Ohtani was intentionally walked before Smith hit a two-bagger to left to score Tommy Edman. Freeman drew a walk to load the bases, and Mookie Betts came through with a two-run single to the opposite field, giving the Dodgers a three-run lead.
Betts’ hit snapped a playoff dry spell and rekindled the defending champions’ hopes of becoming the first repeat World Series winners since the Yankees captured three straight from 1998 to 2000.
Gausman had been nearly unhittable to that stage, striking out six of the initial seven batters he faced. He fanned eight through three innings, matching a World Series mark, but the third-inning barrage proved costly. The Blue Jays' star ended with eight strikeouts over six innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits and two walks.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto, meanwhile, was steady again under pressure. The 27-year-old right-hander outpitched his counterpart for the second time in a seven days, giving up one run on five base hits over six frames with six strikeouts. He boosted his record to 4–1 this playoffs with a 1.56 ERA.
The lone score against him came on George Springer two-out base hit in the third inning, scoring Addison Barger, who had hit a double earlier in the inning. That single offered a momentary lift in his comeback to the lineup after missing a pair of contests with an oblique injury.
After that, the Los Angeles relievers carried the load. First-year pitcher Justin Wrobleski escaped a jam in the seventh inning, and fellow rookie Rōki Sasaki worked into the ninth before hitting Alejandro Kirk to start the inning. Barger then hit a double that got stuck under the outfield wall, obliging base runners to hold at second and third.
Tyler Glasnow, Los Angeles’ third game starting pitcher, came on in relief and got a popout before Giménez hit a line drive to left field. Hernández made the catch and threw to second to retire the runner, clinching the victory and giving the pitcher his first career successful save.
The series now comes down to a single contest. Max Scherzer will take the mound for the Blue Jays, becoming the only living pitcher to start multiple seventh games of the World Series after accomplishing that in the 2019 season with Washington. The veteran inked a single-season contract to pursue one more title and has been a outspoken presence throughout this playoff run.
The Los Angeles squad, aiming to become baseball’s initial repeat champions in almost 25 years, are projected to rely on their two-way star for a brief appearance.
