Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's CEO Exits After Move Towards Chicken.

A chief executive of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who suggested the United Kingdom might have reached pizza saturation while diversifying the chain into chicken products has been replaced after conflicts with its directors.

Leadership Transition

The former CEO is leaving after just two years in leadership, and will be replaced on an acting basis by the company's chief operating officer, Frampton, while Domino's looks for a new leader.

Rennie, who served at the company for over 20 years, had attempted to pivot the UK's leading pizza delivery company towards chicken offerings, remarking recently there was not “huge potential” left in the British pizza industry. He said chicken was the most rapidly expanding protein in the globe.

Governance Tensions

Sources suggest that there was friction between the CEO and the directors over his approach and direction, although Domino's announcement said he was leaving “as a joint decision”.

Recent Product Launch

In the autumn, the chain introduced its poultry brand – which Rennie called a “major strategic shift” for the company – and is trialling it in select stores in the north-west of England and the province.

While the firm is still going to roll it out across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as scheduled, it views fried chicken as a supplement for its primary pizza operations.

Leadership Comment

The Domino's chair, the company chairman, commented: “The board believes that there are a number of opportunities to enhance value and value creation in our primary operations. We are prioritizing selecting the right chief executive to direct the careful implementation of that development approach.”

Industry Challenges

In the latest update, the pizza delivery giant, which has millions of users in the British Isles, said transactions fell by one and a half percent in the Q3. In the summer, it alerted that the food delivery sector had “become tougher” as it attributed weaker consumer confidence in the period before the budget and increasing labor expenses for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15 percent decline in interim earnings.

Competitors are also experiencing difficulties. Another major chain revealed the shutting of 68 restaurants a month ago, after the company behind its outlets entered insolvency.

Health Initiatives

Trying to keep up with consumer trends towards better nutrition, the company has introduced lower-calorie items, such as its light base range of pizzas below 400 kcal as well as vegan and wheat-free options. A big pepperoni bake has 2,311 calories. A family cheese pizza has 2,171, while a small has 909 calories.

Acting Leadership

Frampton has been with the company since 2021, and previously worked for the gaming group William Hill. It is believed that she prefers not to occupy the top job permanently.

She commented: “Our team has a several current growth and performance initiatives that we will be dedicated to carrying out at pace.”

She added these included ongoing development on the company's procurement system and product development, and its loyalty scheme.

The pizza chain is also in need of a long-term finance director until 16 March, when Andy Andrea joins from the drinks company a well-known firm. In the meantime, Richard Snow acts as acting financial officer.
