Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he plans to make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest otherwise," Newsom commented when pressed about contemplating a campaign for president post the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."

The governor's current term as governor ends in January 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he noted that any decision is still years away.

"It's up to destiny," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

The California governor has come to the forefront as a high-profile adversary of the current federal leadership, employing his social media accounts and advocating for a ballot measure that would boost Democratic congressional seats in response to redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has invited attacks from adversaries.

Controversy Over Funds

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom does not care about Californians in a Sunday segment on a major news network. The secretary revealed intentions to pull federal funds from California and suggested revoking the authority to issue trucking licenses.

"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from the state," Duffy declared, after a this week's deadly accident in California involving an undocumented semi truck driver that caused loss of life and four injuries.

The governor's team noted that the national authorities had reauthorized the driver's employment on several occasions, which enabled him to obtain a CDL under national regulations.

Duffy had before announced he was blocking $40m from the state for not enforcing language proficiency rules for truck drivers.

Strong Response from the Team

"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," Newsom's office retorted in a recent release countering the secretary's comments. "For now, unlike this clown, we rely on data: California CDL holders had a accident mortality rate much lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."

Polling Data and Campaign Considerations

A this month's poll showed that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters believed that the governor must consider running for president in 2028. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has risen to an average of about one-third from around 30%, while his unfavorability has fallen from an mean of previous highs to 38.4%.

Some time ago, the governor remarked while on a trip several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for 2028.

He noted his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.

"The thought that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, extraordinary," he said. "Who the hell knows? I await who steps forward in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
