Three police officers perished and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in an apparently deliberate blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The explosion was triggered as officers and emergency crews entered the property near Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the location and another man who ran away subsequent to the blast was found shortly later. The trio have been taken to medical facility.

The explosion could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the location revealed the building left as a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that efforts had been made to evict the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, stated the residence was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations accumulated by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings triggered the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed the media.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the interior minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the blast included an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The official believed the detonation had occurred on a story above the access point and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he said members had “heard a whistle, likely the gas canisters being activated”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors stated to reporters, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister the Defence Minister united with other elected representatives in commemorating the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
