Thehe first time Gorka Guruzeta featured in the UK, an young representing Athletic Bilbao B against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Wycombe’s stadium in fall 2015, he scored. The second time he played in the country, against the English side following that, he converted. His third outing, against the Citizens not long later, sure enough, he repeated the feat. When he returned to Manchester to face United at Leigh’s ground in 2017, he did it once more. A spectacular strike, as well. “In fact,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” So Athletic did what was necessary: they took him off.
“I became very upset,” the Athletic striker reveals, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the second half: I was without a signed deal, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. No confirmation on Newcastle being interested, but I remember reading about Manchester United, the usual talk. I’m not certain how true it was, but even if they had called, my desire was to remain at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At the facility, the city, the morning session is ready to commence; after it, the brief trip to Loiu airport and another flight to the UK, this time to take on the Magpies in the UCL on midweek. Just saying those two words lights him up. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for the team, due in part to the demands of their participation. Beaten in added time in the local rivalry, they have secured just a single victory of their last eight matches and lost against Arsenal and Dortmund in European competition. Yet, consider the broader view, the big nights he has lived and upcoming events, and a sense of thankful reflection about him.
In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, Gorka has been a final four contender in Europe, prevented from reaching a final at home by United, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway accompanied by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in a long wait. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.
The player believed it hard enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that produced Mikel Arteta, the former star and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after his top-level debut in that summer, he went through a serious knee problem, the cut, a relegation and a call back before he could earn his place, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of the club’s history.
“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the first team but every phase you progress through you’re persisting and you can notice the proximity. You make it and … you have to leave.” He had limited game time in a handful of matches between his debut and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and my knee gave way.
“A massive setback but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it made me change the outlook. The rehabilitation process is challenging, but it helps. You develop habits new to you. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then go home, like when you’re a kid. At Lezama, you have everything, so do everything. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All the minor details: perform them.
“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have crashed into players repeatedly. They’re so strong. I look at photos of me before: my physique was slight. So what happens, happens. Current photos and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Sessions end, but additional work remains. Everyone else is ready, really ready; you have to be too.”
Minutes are crucial. The striker moved emotionally in that year, aged 23, joining the second tier. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he netted three goals in forty appearances. With Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and should the time come the requirement appears for your role, recall is possible. Preparation is key. When the opportunity came, it was a dream come true. To then win the Copa del Rey, European football, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks appreciate the experience. Particularly after last year which, sometimes, was focused on persistence. Previously the main threat with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
