The the Moroccan side overcame a anxious start to beat Comoros in the tournament's first match on Sunday, with goals from the Real Madrid attacker and super-sub Ayoub El Kaabi in the second half.
It was a hardly emphatic showing, though, from the strongly favored Moroccans, who sit 97 places higher than the small island nation in the FIFA rankings and had to toil hard for the three points in rainy conditions at the national stadium.
The hosts failed to convert an early penalty and were locked at 0-0 at half-time even with dominating possession, finally breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.
It came when Noussair Mazraoui showed great skill to prevent the ball from going out before laying it across for DĂaz to sidefoot into the net.
“The first match is never easy but we improved in the second half,” commented Morocco coach Walid Regragui.
The tension was then extinguished by a moment of pure genius from Ayoub El Kaabi. Only ten minutes following coming on, the forward met a cross with a spectacular overhead kick in the 74th minute, making it two and ensuring the win.
Earlier in the match, the hosts could have been ahead in the 11th minute after a spot-kick was given for a challenge on DĂaz. Yet, Rahimi's penalty was saved by Comoros goalkeeper Pandor.
Comoros stoutly defended against their more illustrious opponents for long periods until the Moroccans' greater quality eventually told.
Goalkeeper Pandor pulled off a number of other good stops to limit the score as the game progressed, even though Comoros did have a chance for an equaliser shortly following the first goal, with SaĂŻd firing directly into Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
The three points was partially marred by an apparent injury to Morocco's skipper, SaĂŻss, who limped off after the 18th minute in tears.
This centre-back had just returned to the national side last month after a lengthy absence due to a serious ankle operation.
The win extends the team's record-breaking run of successive victories to 19, beating the old best of 15 set by Spain between 2008 and 2009.
