Olympic gold medalist Anthony Joshua has been released from care, Nigerian authorities confirmed on Wednesday night. The 36-year-old was part of a serious road collision outside Lagos on December 29th, a devastating event that claimed the lives of two of his team members.
Joshua had remained in the hospital while recuperating from non-critical injuries, representatives confirmed on Monday. The commissioner for information and strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, announced via a post on social media that Joshua was judged healthy enough to continue his recovery at home.
“The boxer and his mother were at the mortuary in Lagos this afternoon to say their last goodbyes to his two deceased friends as they were being prepared for repatriation,” Omotosho said.
The victims of the crash were confirmed to be Latif Ayodele, a personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, a performance coach. It was also noted that the athlete was heartbroken and deeply emotional over the passing of his two trusted companions.”
His release from the hospital comes as the sports world offered sympathy for the champion in the wake of the heartbreaking incident.
