In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
