A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
